Through the Night: Stories from Ultras, mountains and long days out

About

What draws someone towards running through the night, across mountains, through bad weather and long periods of discomfort — and what keeps them coming back? Join Marcus Scotney in conversation with two of Britain and Ireland’s most accomplished ultra runners, Anna Troup and Carol Morgan, for an honest discussion about endurance, resilience and the realities of long-distance mountain running. From Spine Races and Lakeland hundreds to winter Wainwright rounds and records on the Pennine Way, the conversation will explore the highs, lows and lessons that come from spending huge amounts of time in difficult places. This won’t just be a conversation about racing, but about mindset, setbacks, recovery, pacing, motivation and why ultra running continues to pull people back for more. Marcus Scotney (Host) is an ultra runner, endurance coach and sports therapist with more than 30 years of running experience across road, trail, mountain and multi-day racing. He has represented Great Britain and England in ultra running, including at the World and European 100km Championships. Marcus is perhaps best known in the mountain and ultra world for winning both the Cape Wrath Ultra and the Dragon’s Back Race, setting a then-course record at the latter in 2017. Alongside racing, he coaches runners of all abilities through White Edge Coaching and is currently studying for an MSc in Sports Performance Coaching. With a background spanning ultra running, orienteering, mountain marathons and coaching, Marcus brings a deep understanding of endurance, mindset and long days in difficult terrain. Whether you’re ultra-curious, building towards your first long-distance event, or already deep into the sport, expect stories, insight and plenty of honesty from three runners with decades of experience between them.

Anna Troup is one of Britain’s most accomplished ultra runners, known for her performances across long-distance mountain and trail events including wins at Lakeland 100 and the Arc of Attrition, age group podiums at UTMB and outright wins at the Spine Race and the FKT on the Pennine Way. Now based in Grasmere, she has become well known for combining elite endurance performances with an open and honest approach to the realities of ultra running and recovery, particularly as we age (she is now 56). After being told she may never run again following bone injury, Anna returned to ultra running in April 2025 and went on to win some of Britain’s toughest long-distance routes, including back-to-back wins at the Spine Race in Summer 2025 and Winter 2026 and Race Across Scotland. Her running spans mountain ultras, self-supported adventures and multi-day endurance efforts, with a particular connection to the landscapes and trails of the Chilterns round Henley on Thames, not just the mountains of the Lake District. Carol Morgan is an Irish ultra runner renowned for her performances in some of the toughest mountain and endurance races in the UK and beyond. She is a multiple-time Spine Race winner and has completed events including the Dragon’s Back Race and Tor des Géants. More recently, she completed a solo, unsupported mid winter Bob,Graham Round- the only woman to have done so under 24hours. Alongside running, Carol works in emergency medicine, bringing a unique perspective on resilience, fatigue and problem-solving under pressure. Her experience across mountain ultras, winter rounds and multi-day racing has made her one of the most respected figures in British and Irish ultra running.
