WHY YOU SHOULD TRY OMM LITE

1. The views – The course will take you to some of the best views in the Lake District

2. The sense of achievement – You have to work out where to go.

3. The social side – The most important thing is to enjoy your day with friends exploring the Lake District.

THE CHALLENGE:

We’ve placed 30 checkpoints around the valley. Your team has a set amount of time to find as many checkpoints as you can and get back to the HQ before your time runs out.

We’ll give you a map showing where the checkpoints are, you just need to work out how to find them.

You could run hard or take a more social approach and stop for lunch on the way. It’s up to you how you use your time.

The team that collects the most points wins!

What are the different courses?

There are three race options to choose from:

Choose a one or two day event: You can choose one or two days (you’ll return to Grasmere for day one and then head out to collect more points on day 2).

Choose how long you want to be out for:

Long Course – Time limit: Saturday 7 hours, Sunday 5 hours;

Short Course – Time limit: Saturday 5 hours, Sunday 4 hours

Finally, choose your teammates:

Compete as a team (either of two or three) or as an individual. Teams must stay within talking distance of each other at all times.

We will be using Ordnance Survey 1:25000 maps

Take a look at what you’ll see on the start line:

Example Map

Each checkpoint is marked with a two-letter code and a circle symbols. The score for each checkpoint is also given in brackets.

Not used a map before?

If you have not used a map before but would like to try, get in touch. We partner with navigation experts who can give you a friendly online introduction to using a map and the OMM Lite format. Email [email protected] for more information.

Each competitor must wear or carry the following:

Taped seams waterproof jacket (with hood) and trousers
Clothing suitable for mountain running and walking
• Warm layer top
Hat (this can be a buff) and gloves
Footwear suitable for trail use
A pen or pencil
Whistle & Compass
Map (as supplied)
First aid equipment
Emergency food (this is something to keep you going in an emergency – you must have these when you finish)
Water carrying capability
Fully charged mobile phone

This list should be seen as a minimum requirement. You might use any previous experience and sound judgment for the kit you need. You should also always check the weather forecast and adapt accordingly (e.g., you might need suncream).

The organisers reserve the right to disqualify any competitors who, in their opinion, do not have the necessary kit to cope in an emergency situation.

Any decisions to reduce the amount of kit you need to carry (e.g. in exceptionally warm weather) will be posted at Registration on the morning of the event.

You do not need to bring all your kit to registration for checking, just your backpack (1 per team) so that your tracker can be attached, however random kit checks will be carried out at any point during the event.

Compete as a team (either of two or three) or as an individual. Team must stay within talking distance of each other at all times.

What do we do on the start line?

In your event details email (sent out two weeks before the event), you’ll be given a start time window. Make sure you’re registered early so that you don’t miss your start wave.

Head to the start line within your allocated start time window for a quick race brief. You will be given any final information before being asked to ‘dib’ your timing tag in the START box.  Your time will begin and you will then be given your map (a new one each day), showing all the checkpoint locations available for that day and how many points they are worth.  You then move away from the start line and plan your route.

Each checkpoint will have an orienteering orange and white sign with a control box attached to it. Your timing tag (attached to your wrist) should be placed into the hole in the control box to register you have visited the location; it will bleep and flash to confirm that this has been successful.

In the unlikely event that the control box doesn’t work, please record your visit writing down the 3 letters shown on the control box (you can also take a photo if easier) and report this when you download at the finish so your score can be updated.

All OMM Lite competitors have a hot meal and drink included in their entry fee which can be picked up in the main marquee after you finish on Sunday (Saturday for those competing on Saturday only).  When booking you can select meat, vegetarian, vegan or gluten free options. But, if you have a serious allergy or concern please email [email protected] prior to the event.
